The purpose of the creative reflection is for students to examine their feelings about working with children in the pediatric setting. Creative reflections are one way to process experiences, gain awareness, and integrate knowledge. Reflection is a form of mental processing (thinking) and is largely based on the further processing of knowledge and understanding and emotions that we already possess (Bolton, 2010; Moon, 1999). Creative reflection is used in the pediatric population to help the child express, understand, or make meaning of an unexpected experience or trauma. Clinical rotations can be difficult, especially in the pediatric population. This exercise is designed for you to practice what the child may do when expressing, understanding, or attempting to make meaning of his/her own experience, hospitalization, or trauma. This practice is encouraged throughout your nursing career as a way to find meaning in difficult or unexpected experiences. After the clinical experience, you will synthesize the experience through creative reflection. It is encouraged for you to read both articles below. 2 Tasks:
-
- Poem must center around an event that evoked significant feelings and include your feelings about the event, how you handled the event, overall feeling about the day, your co-workers interaction in the event and their feelings or action
- Write a reflective journal including a description of your creative piece and a summary of the meanings, symbols, and other items incorporated into it (1-2 pages). Include descriptions of the clinical problems and what doing this project did for you.
