ISSUE: Homelessness in San Diego
Make sure that the policy brief/webpages/reports you cite information from has powerful/eye-opening statistic
Your issue paper will be a maximum of TWO pages; these are meant to highlight the key points of your social issue. Make use of the article, “How to plan, write, and communicate an effective policy brief” from last week to help you be successful on this assignment.
The paper is single spaced and will include four sections:
a. An introduction to the problem: Approximately half a page (single spaced) on: why it is important, the scale/size of the problem, and the consequences of this problem. You should make it clear whether you are talking about San Diego, California, or national statistics and findings. These points should be supported by the policy briefs/webpages/reports that you read with citations. (20 points)
b. For the remainder of page 1, include a series of bullets which highlight the most important points about the WHY, SCALE/SIZE, and CONSEQUENCES of the social problem. These should not exactly repeat your first section but be short clear points about these three dimensions; including a statistic in each bullet can be powerful, but is not necessary. Again, make sure to cite where it comes from. (5 points)
c. The third section will be a deeper dive into one of the studies you found (approximately half a page single spaced). Select one of the policy briefs/studies you found and summarize the following information: a) their study setting, b) their data and data collection methods, c) the types of analyses they used to study the social problem, d) their main findings, and e) their recommendations. (15 points)
d. The final section is your reflection, approximately 1/4 page single-spaced in which you reflect on how the reports you read take into account any or all of the following concepts: community based participatory research, problem-solving sociology, and race/social class privilege. (10 points)
e. You should end the second page with your citations/references
