Discussion Question 6567

Prompt:

Choose a main character from a movie of your choice and provide a simplified cognitive conceptualization from the Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) lens. (Hint: see Chapter 3 of the CBT book). Choose a relatively well-known mainstream movie (no foreign language films or small private studio movies) that your peers have not chosen. Create a case conceptualization the way you would with a new client.

  • Be sure to address the following:
  • Provide a brief synopsis of the character
  • Identify at least one known or suspected core belief
  • Identify at least two known or suspected automatic thoughts
  • Identify at least one intermediate belief (rules, attitudes, assumptions)
  • Specify at least two known or suspected automatic thoughts for the character.
  • What specific situation/reaction from the film is being highlighted/focused on?

For example, Will Hunting from the film Good Will Hunting.

Will Hunting (portrayed by Matt Damon) is young man from South Boston with photographic memory that works as a janitor at MIT. His genius level intelligence is both a gift and a burden. He grew up in the foster care system and has experienced abuse which has led him to engage in self-destructive behaviors. The film presents his journey of self-discovery when he starts therapy. I suspect he has a core belief that he is fundamentally unworthy of love based on his history of trauma and a sense of abandonment. He probably automatically thinks, “I’m just a janitor from South Boston. I don’t deserve to be here” and “People will always leave, so why bother getting close to anyone”? An intermediate belief that I suspect informs his behavior is, “Vulnerability or opening up will lead to rejection or betrayal”, so he behaves in a guarded fashion. This conceptualization is evident in the depiction of his resistance to having a relationship with Skylar (played by Minnie Driver) and his tendency to self-sabotage academic and career opportunities.
