The objective of this assignment is for students to describe the socialization of the child; focusing on the interrelationship of family, school, and community. SLO#1

Think about your own life using Bronfenbenner’s Ecological Model and create your own ecological model paper. Your paper will be a high quality and deep reflection of your own childhood and the influences from each of the ecological systems: micro, meso, exo and macro (not Chrono).

This assignment should reflect college-level writing, contain few errors for spelling and grammar usage; typed, 11 or 12 font, double spaced, appropriate length. Please do NOT include the questions or directions in your paper. When describing Bronfenbrenner and/or the systems, do NOT copy and paste definitions or examples from any other source. You may quote something you are using to describe or explain, but give that author credit by providing where it came from. Otherwise, writing MUST be re-written in your own wording and original work. That is why you will be submitting to turnitin. I WILL check for originality and points are not given to copied work.

Include a Title, your Full Name, CDE15, Semester/year of course, My name (Kris McCartney) on first page.

This paper will have a 6 paragraphs/sections:

Paragraph/section 1: Introduction paragraph

Paragraphs/sections 2-5: Each system will have it’s own paragraph.

Paragraph/section 6: Conclusion paragraph

Introduction: Paragraph 1 Explain who Bronfenbrenner was, the main idea of this theory, and the purpose of your paper (how you will relate your upbringing to the systems).

Think back to your earliest childhood memories and consider the following questions to help you write and analyze your own ecological model for paragraphs 2-5:

Microsystems: Paragraph 2First, describe the system and provide a few general examples. Next, consider the influences from each system in your childhood. Last, HOW has it impacted you during adulthood.

Use the following questions to help you analyze this system. As our experiences are all different you are not limited to these questions. You may add additional information, as you feel necessary (you do NOT need to answer all of the questions).

For brainstorm:

  • Who lived in your household? mom dad 2 sisters and brother
  • What role did your father play in your early life? working and making money to live
  • What role did your mother play in your early life? taking care of us, teaching us the schools homework and many more things
  • How many brothers and/or sisters did you have? How did they impact your relationships? 1 brother and 2 sisters love them so much without them I would not the same person I’m today
  • When did you begin school?
  • Where did you play?

In your paragraph, focus on the impact of the above factors and how it shaped you.

  • How did your immediate family, your early peers, and first school experience influence you?
  • What values, morals, beliefs were you taught (either spoken or unspoken) and by whom?
  • In your paragraph, focus on the impact and how it shaped you into the person you are today.

Mesosystems: Paragraph 3 First, describe the system and provide a few general examples. Next, consider the influences from each system in your childhood. Last, HOW has it impacted you during adulthood.

Use the following questions to help you analyze this system. As our experiences are all different you are not limited to these questions. You may add additional information, as you feel necessary (you do NOT need to answer all of the questions).

For brainstorm:

  • Describe your home life as a child (age 0 -18) very peaceful
  • Describe your neighborhood environment and the relationships with neighbors. friendly
  • Describe your elementary school environment and culture and the relationships between these people.
  • What other groups were you a part of (religious, sports, scouts, cultural, etc.)
  • Was your neighborhood considered rural, inner city, suburban?

In your paragraph, focus on the impact of the above factors and how it shaped you.

  • Consider how the interactions and relationships (or lack thereof) between the people in your microsystem have influenced your childhood and current relationships.

Exosystems Paragraph 4First, describe the system and provide a few general examples. Next, consider the influences from each system in your childhood. Last, HOW has it impacted you during adulthood.

Use the following questions to help you analyze this system. As our experiences are all different you are not limited to these questions. You may add additional information, as you feel necessary (you do NOT need to answer all of the questions).

For Brainstorm:

  • What role did extended family play in your childhood?
  • What role did neighbors play in your childhood?
  • How did your parent/s’ occupation influence your lifestyle and/or values?
  • What was your family’s social status? Economic status?
  • Was there any influence from city or state government that affected you as a child? (consider resources that were available to you or were not available)

In your paragraph, focus on the impact of the above factors and how it shaped you into the person you are today.

Macrosystem Paragraph 5First, describe the system and provide a few general examples. Next, consider the influences from each system in your childhood. Last, HOW has it impacted you during adulthood.

Use the following questions to help you analyze this system. As our experiences are all different you are not limited to these questions. You may add additional information, as you feel necessary (you do NOT need to answer all of the questions).

List on chart for brainstorm:

  • Describe your culture (we are all part of the American culture), including predominant values, beliefs and customs.
  • How strongly do you identify with your race, ethnicity, and culture? (This could also include sub-cultures)
  • What was the social and political climate of the era? (Politics do impact everyone, think of your freedoms afforded to you living in America, the laws that are place and the priorities of the country).

In your paragraph, focus on the impact and how it shaped you into the person you are today.

  • How do you feel the expectations in your macrosystem have influenced you? Do you adhere to them closely or have you deviated from the norm and why?


Conclusion: Paragraph 6 First, share how this assignment has changed your outlook on how a child is socialized. Then, now that you understand how the different systems directly impact one’s life, how or will this change your interactions with others? Last, How might this help you as a teacher, caregiver or parent? What might you do differently in those roles?

Grading:

From Grading Rubric:
Intro: 5 pts
Paragraph includes a of who Bronfenbrenner was, an accurate premise of the theory, main idea and purpose of the paper; college level original writing, few errors for spelling and grammar usage; typed, 12 font, double spaced, appropriate length.

Each System: 10 pts each
Names and explains the components of the system. Gives clear and explicit examples of the components. Clear connections between the events in your life and how it has influenced you as an adult. Each system has its own paragraph.

Conclusion: 5 pts
Answers the question listed above in the directions: In a paragraph, share how this assignment has changed your outlook on how a child is socialized. Now that you understand how the different systems directly impact one’s life, how or will this change your interactions with others?

The assignment is due at the end of week 2. It will remain open for one more week to allow for late submissions, that will lose points each day late (review syllabus for details).
