Outline Poverty

Outline (noun)

Essay #2

Cause/Effect Essay

Now that you’ve selected a topic to explore for your cause and effect essay and written a thesis statement, it’s time to make a plan. An outline is like a roadmap for your essay. Just like you wouldn’t get in the car to drive across the country without a good map telling you how to get from Point A to Point B, you don’t want to start an essay without planning exactly what you’re going to include and how those details will be arranged.

Download this outline template, save it using your name in the file name, and edit it to fit your essay. This includes the title page!

Approved Topic: Poverty

Approved Thesis statement: Poverty can impact access to standard education, people’s well-being, and the family unit.

  • For the thesis statement, copy this from last week’s assignment if your instructor approved it, or write your revised thesis statement here if your instructor suggested changes.
  • The topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs should do two things: (a) remind the reader of the thesis and (b) tell the reader what point that specific paragraph will be making. These should be complete sentences, even in your outline.
  • Remember, too, that you’ll need to include information from your outside sources. This requires correctly incorporating the information you want to use (by either quoting directly or paraphrasing) and including proper in-text citations and a Reference page. You need to include at least three citations in your outline!

Something to consider: The outline provided for this assignment allows for four body paragraphs, with five details per paragraph. You may need more or less, depending on where you plan on taking your writing. A video showing you how to add sections is included in the lecture material in this unit.

Attached below is a sample outline to assist with assigment, a video of professor guiding us through the outline (Please watch!) , and a Cause and Effect APA_7th_ed._Template. All the tools you need for this assignment.

Part 2:

This week in the discussion, we want to share revised thesis statements and topic sentences for your CAUSE AND EFFECT essay.

Please take a moment to view the feedback your instructor provided on your thesis statement. Then, in your initial post:

  • Share your original thesis AND your revised thesis (if you did not need to revise your thesis, please indicate this). (USLO 9.1)
  • Next, share the topic sentences for your body paragraphs. If you still have questions about what these terms mean, please review the course materials and the outline templates for your outline assignment. (USLO 9.3).

As you read the thesis statements and topic sentences of your peers, consider what questions you have for them. Use this as a time to ask questions, offer tips, and explore the topics a bit! We are not looking for opinions on the topics themselves. Instead, consider how well the thesis statement sets up the topic sentences, how well the topic sentences support the thesis statement, and if it all supports the topic well.

Your initial response should have your informed input and should be at least 100 words. Your input should be in your own words, demonstrating your understanding and comprehension of the topic.

The initial post and responses should be in your own words and demonstrate critical thinking, analysis, and expected level of knowledge. Initial posts and replies should be in complete sentences and in paragraph form. You should not have bullet points as they are not in complete sentences or paragraph form. Copy-pasting may result in a zero.

To fully address the chosen prompt, you will refer to the topical outline of the course syllabus that corresponds with the prompt you select. This will help guide you in demonstrating your understanding of the content while providing a thorough and detailed discussion post. Each prompt or response to a prompt should be more than a few sentences to demonstrate critical thinking. Initial posts must include a minimum of one APA 7th edition style in-text citations and full matching references of appropriate reading to support your responses.
