Can an Internal Parasitic Infection Be
Beneficial to the Host?
There have always been beliefs among some people that some parasitic infections are beneficial. An example would be people who think that thin people who “eat a lot” must have a tapeworm that causes them to lose weight. As a general rule, when most people think of parasitism, they think of two different species living in close association with one another where one species (the parasite) benefits and the other (the host) is harmed in some way.
However, there have been some reports that infections with some parasites, particularly internal ones, may actually have benefits to the host, and that getting rid of these parasites might be more harmful to us than the parasite infection itself.
Directions for the Extra Assignment:
Please write a 2+ page paper on some studies and reports on parasitic infections believed to benefit the host. You can also add your personal opinions or critique to these studies if you wish (like “hey, this is true because…..” or “this is a bunch of BS – biological speculation”, etc.)
Look up some legitimate books, journals or articles that reports or make claims like this, and briefly report this in your paper. Please reference the sources. You should have at least 3 references. Try to find recent ones (published within the last 10 years).
This is an individual project, not a group one. The report has to be done independently. If I find the same journal being cited it suggests the work was not done individually = no credit.
The report should be done with 12-point Font size in Arial or Times New Roman, and 1.5 line spacing. Please be succinct and use scientific language.
