Persuasive Essay 190

Instructions:

In 3–5 double-spaced pages, please do the following:

  1. In discussion and lecture, we have discussed how to be a persuasive speaker. For this assignment, you shall write a speech to persuade your audience to pursue a Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (can be either your own major or a major different from your own). Your audience is your discussion section.
  2. In your essay, you shall use each of the following at least once: a piece of persuasion through logic (logos); a piece of persuasion through emotion (pathos); and a piece of persuasion through character (ethos).
  3. Cite additional sources when necessary. We have already seen when and how appealing to experts or established logic can strengthen arguments. Hint: logical arguments are often stronger with evidence.
  4. Style and structure, as we’ve learned, are incredibly important to an effective speech. As such, make use of your CER and CES to give your speech a unique voice. Introduce into your writing variation, structure differentiation, and dramatic devices. Show us how you will use a certain style to communicate your message.

Guidelines for Success:

  1. You will be graded on the overall strength of your arguments and the effectiveness of your use of logos, pathos, and ethos. We have seen what makes good arguments for each of those categories, so make sure to review your notes from lecture. Remember that excellent rhetorical writing is well-proportioned and purposeful.
  2. Your essay should be formatted according to the Five Canons of Rhetoric and the Disposition of Rhetoric. Specifically, you must consider at least one counterargument.
  3. You should substantiate factual statements with proper citation.
  4. Making arguments with ethos can be more difficult than making arguments with logos and pathos because you must gain your audience’s trust. For this assignment, it may be
helpful to determine how you will present yourself to your audience to get them to side with you. How can you present yourself as credible, virtuous, or an agent of goodwill?
  5. Write with clarity, brevity, and impact. Each word you write should have a purpose; it should ‘work’ for you. If a word is superfluous, verbose, or plain puffery, cut it. The best writing simple and attention-grabbing.
  6. See rubric for grading instructions.
  7. Attach Affidavit of Compliance
