In the classic sense of a French colonial city, you will discover “dualism” (two Rabats side by side: The traditional city – the Medina – that sees scant modernization and becomes the place where natives are segregated and policed, and the “French” city that is master-planned, amenities-rich, and is the white residential, economic, and administrative heart of the city. Surrounding Rabat are the military barracks that preserve the colonial regime at the constant threat of violence. If you can tell this story through an analysis of Rabat’s built forms, you will succeed!”
