Reading Response Paper Assignment
Aim: The goal of the assignment is to apply your sociological knowledge to real-world examples.
Grading: You will be given a letter grade based on the default FSU grading scale. Please see the syllabus for the percentages that roughly correspond to each letter. This will be worth 15% of your grade.
Assignment: You will read “Ticket to the Fair” by David Foster Wallace from the July 1994 issue of Harper’s Magazine. You will then write a 1-to-2-page response paper. You will spend 2-4 paragraphs applying terms/concepts from the course to examples in the article. This should include a sentence summarizing the anecdote from the article followed by a few sentences applying the terms from the course.
You must use SPECIFIC anecdotes. If you just use generic language like “interactions between vendors and fairgoers” you will not do well.
Formatting Guidelines
I expect your reaction papers to follow this format:
-Times New Roman font, size 12.
-One-inch margins on all sides.
-Double spaced text.
-Single spaced heading: Your name, date, course assignment ONLY.
-Write in paragraph form – no bullet points or strange formatting.
-There is no need for an introduction or conclusion. Get right into the paper.
