Research Paper Advanced Traffic Signal Operation At Least 5 Full Pages But No More Than 10 Full Pages

OVERVIEW

Students must research an Advanced Traffic Signal Operation of their choosing and submit a technical paper as part of their evaluated work for this course. This assignment will help students develop stronger technical communication skills while creating an awareness of the need for continuing education within the transportation engineering profession.

RESEARCH TOPICS

Students will be evaluated on their ability to gather, review, and interpret reliable technical data within the field of Traffic Signal Operations by submitting a technical research paper. Evaluations will focus on the student’s technical writing abilities and ability to convey technical subject matter to other engineering professionals.

Each student must select a component/system/operation relating to traffic signals they are personally interested in researching. Selections are not limited to a single topic and may include multiple components or pieces.

For example, a student may be interested in Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM’s). This topic may include research regarding vehicle detection systems and their requirements to collect the needed ATSPM data; the software/hardware components needed to process the ATSPM data; and possible use-case scenarios incorporating the ATSPM data into projects (i.e. signal retiming’s; safety-related studies; etc.). Other examples include adaptive traffic signals, innovative intersections modifying traditional signalized movements, variable lane-assignments, and signal phasing (FHWA interim approval for North Carolina DOT pilot project). The possibilities are endless!

Students are encouraged to write in the first person as this is an informal research paper. Please have fun with this assignment.

FORMATTING GUIDELINES(PAPER)

Students shall follow the guidelines listed below for the written report:

  • Students are encouraged but not required to include a graphic on the title page.

    BODY OF REPORT

  • Students shall use the following approved font styles, font sizes, line spacings, and paper margins for the body of the report:
  • o Fonts: Arial, Arial Nova, Georgia, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Verdana
