    Week 2 Video

Week 2 VideoOvercoming Adversity by W. Mitchell (12:23)Watch this video to complete your discussion post this week.Undefeated by a blazing motorcycle accident and a paralyzing plane crash four years later, W. Mitchell learned to take responsibility for the countless changes in his life. Whether coping with devastating burns over 65% of his body or being sentenced to life in a wheelchair, this once robust Marine firmly held on to his feisty nature and quick wit. He became an internationally acclaimed mayor “who saved a mountain”, a successful businessman who put thousands of people to work, a Congressional nominee from Colorado, and a respected environmentalist and conservationist who repeatedly testified before Congress.

  • Please watch the short video of W. Mitchell above. I can’t think of many people who have more reasons than Mitchell to blame, complain, and become a victim of circumstances. Let’s try to look at our workplaces from a new perspective.
    1. After watching the W. Mitchell video, discuss the importance of personal responsibility ESPECIALLY in adversity. How might he have taken a lower path after being a victim of events? In what ways do you empower negative events (i.e., others’ poor behaviors, events) to keep you down or to react in maladaptive ways?
    2. Identify 2 concepts/theories from chapter 5 to help you respond (think, behave) differently.
    3. Using ‘systems thinking’, how will changes in your mindset and behaviors, affect your relationships? Department? Other departments? Organization?
