Critical Analysis Paper For Gender

The topic I want to discuss in my final critical analysis paper 15-25 pages

how the cultural phenomenon of son preference in Chinese society shows gender inequality in China and reveals the gender ideology and the systematic operation of a patriarchal society.

Preference for bearing sons is a common social custom and cultural tradition in China. (Zhang, 2011) Son preference in China is a gender preference issue underpinned by the belief that boys have more value than girls. In China, the bias towards male over female offspring is demonstrated by gender sex ratio. Whether children are male, or female has an economic impact on families since the financial support that parents receive after their child marries is significantly differentiated by their gender. (Wikipedia, 2024)

I chose this topic for this semester because of my personal experience in a traditional northern Chinese family. I grew up in Shandong, where the preference for boys over girls is both evident and disturbing. In some families, there is a preference for a new baby to be a boy rather than a girl. This idea of taking origin in people’s minds piqued my curiosity, and I hope to use ecosystem theory as an analytical tool to explore the topic of gender preference in my articles, aiming to understand in many ways why this preference exists and how it is perpetuated through cultural and social structures.

The main practical goal of the project is to shed light on the socio-cultural dynamics and gender ideologies in northern China, where entrenched gender inequalities have led to the perception that male offspring are significantly superior to female offspring. I want to construct an analysis through the lens of ecosystem theory to identify why gender ideology and inequality are rooted. The practical impact may include insights from minority populations and educators to break down this bias and how to practice promoting gender equality. Regarding learning objectives, the program aspires to practice and enhance academic research skills through critical exposure to various sources and an in-depth understanding of ecosystem theory and its application to real-world social problems. The project will also provide an opportunity to deepen understanding of social constructs within specific cultural contexts and traditional gender ideologies.
