Your essay should include:

An introduction

  • that clearly introduces the question that will be answered and provides a rationale for why answering this question is important;
  • that talks about the approach taken to answer the question and the materials used (primary and secondary source);
  • that includes an outline of the essay (a of how the essay is structured: In order to answer the overall question, which smaller questions will be answered and why?);
  • the introduction can but doesn’t have to include a hypothetical answer to the question

A main part

  • that presents a clearly structured argument in form of the development of an answer to the overall question in several steps (each step relates to the former one, and only what is relevant to answer the question is included in the essay);
  • whose argument includes, discusses and evaluates different perspectives & positions (arguments and counter-arguments) with regard to central questions relevant for discussing the main question
  • that demonstrates a critical understanding of some of theories, principles, concepts and terminology discussed throughout the lectures and tutorials (e.g. representation; stereotyping; the educational journey; archetypes, etc.)
  • that, where appropriate, considers and refers to professional, legal and ethical contexts, codes and guidance (UNDHR, UNCRC, Equality Act(s), GTCS Standards of Registration, CfE, etc.)

A conclusion

  • that presents the reader with an answer to the overall question of the essay;
  • that includes a self-reflection of the essay itself upon the limitations of/ the problems with the answer that is given in the essay;
  • that gives an outlook for future research (what questions remained unanswered; what research needs to be done now; how could the given answer be improved; etc.)

Structuring sentences (meta-speech about the essay)

  • Which guide the reader and introduce & connect the different parts of the essay (usually by saying what has been talked about before, what will be talked about now, and why)

Correct Form

  • The essay is written in correct, precise and clear language (academic English in correct syntax and semantics; correct punctuation, spelling and grammar);
  • The essay clearly addresses the question proposed to answer (you must include the question at the start of the essay so that the marker is in no doubt as to which essay question you are responding to).
  • The essay supports all relevant points through quotations/ citations/ references to academic literature;
  • The essay includes the necessary lists in a correct form (reference list, list of tables/ pictures if necessary, etc.); APA 7th edition for references (http://guides.lib.strath.ac.uk/referencing_guide/apa)
