Similarities And Differences Between The Original Film And The Adapted And Remade Film

INSTRUCTIONS: At the end of the term, students will be asked to submit a written response to the following ‘big question’, which represents their cumulative learning for the term, and which is worth 20% of their final grade. 2 THE BIG QUESTION: Based on your learning throughout the term what are the essential and most important similarities and differences between original films and their adaptations and re-makes? Specifically, consider similarities or differences between Invasion of the Body Snatchers and World War Z.What is the impact of time and context, on storytelling styles, development of characters, representations of identity, and key social values and ideologies at play in both these films? Respond with a well-reasoned argument, using examples from the films you refer to support your points. Take in to account any of the following components that help to support your points:genre codes and conventions, central conflicts, aesthetics (mood, atmosphere) and cinematic techniques (e.g. camerawork, lighting, colour, set design, costume, editing, music, sound effects, and anything else you think is important. Bonus Component:How have changes in film audiences (tastes, expectations, demographics) also influenced approaches to film adaptations and remakes? (3%) Guidelines Your response to the ‘Big Question’ should be about 2-3 pages long double-spaced (about 500-700 words). You are welcome to write more than that (not too much more), but not less than. Please paginate, and italicize any film or text titles. 3 The ‘Big Question’ Response should be written as an essay, in sentence and paragraph form. Do not break up your discussion into separate sections answering each of the questions above. Address them altogether in your response. You must pay attention to paragraphing, punctuation, spelling and grammar. You should also take time to edit and proof read your entry before uploading it. It must be coherent, and as well-written as you can manage. Remember to use examples (from the films) to back up your points. This is not a research essay, as you are not required or expected to consult secondary sources. This is meant to be based on your own ideas and opinions. However if you do include a quote, or refer to an outside source, say from an historian, critic, scholar, professor, or filmmaker, make sure to include a proper citation, following any of the approved style guides for academic papers (MLA, Harvard, Chicago etc.). If you are not familiar with citation style, then please use any of the style guides available online or in the library. If you use any outside sources, they should also be included in a bibliography at the end of the paper. You should consult a style guide for proper formatting of bibliographical references. Also, wherever you refer to a film, you must include the film’s title (in italics), followed by the name of the filmmaker, and the year of the film’s release. For example: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel, 1956). All films mentioned should be included in a filmography at the end of the paper. The filmography is a list of films referred to in the paper, in alphabetical order by title, and including the 4 filmmaker’s name, and the year of release (as above).
