Write a two-page (1.5 space 12 point type) paper using one work of art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You will need to visit the Museum on your own. Put the object title, artist and gallery # in your title. Your paper should include a clear analysis of the work of art and it’s distinctive features. Remember that a work of art is more than the scene that it represents.  Discuss, colors, composition, and application of paint or use of materials. Consider whether it is a fragment or a whole; discuss its intended original use and its current display.  You should use information drawn from the textbook, research in the library and/or class notes to discuss the period or style of art represented in your object.  You may use label information and or additional information provided by the Museum but if you do so, please be sure to cite your sources. At least two thirds of your paper should be your own observations. Your presentation must demonstrate the following competencies: Goal 1:              The ability to carefully analyze and describe an original work of art from the time period we have been studying. Goal 2:              An understanding of the stylistic qualities specific to the time period in which this work of art was created. Goal 3:              Familiarity and understanding of art historical terminology Goal 4:             Excellent use of the medium of communication (writing or otherwise) : An excellent paper will show a careful analysis of the art object informed by a clear understanding of the terms used to describe works of art.  The paper will use complete sentences, correct spelling and flowing grammar.  All references will be properly cited with footnotes.
